'Ali' movie punched by budget constraints

Columbia Pictures, alarmed by the USD$100-million-plus budget of 'Ali', a biopic of legendary boxer Mohamed Ali, have reined in director Michael Mann ('The Insider') for talks on the feasibility of continuing the production of the movie.

Reportedly, studio officials and Mann are discussing financial cutbacks on expensive location shooting, director's fees and salaries for star Will Smith ('Men in Black', 'Wild Wild West') and producer Jon Peters.

Still, indications are that the film appears to be doomed. All is not lost for Smith, however, as he has received an offer to reprise a role in the upcoming Men in Black sequel. Will Smith is loved by Malaysian movie-goers for his hilarious roles in movies like 'Independence Day'.
