Review by: Michelle Tan Click here for pictures The tagline of 'Bedazzled' promises a wicked comedy, and it certainly entertains; witty and sharp. And it's devilishly funny. What we have is the lovely Elizabeth Hurley dressed in designer grabs with slits up to there and plunging necklines down to there. With her as the devil, temptation goes on overdrive especially for poor pathetic Elliott Richards, a sad combination of a nerd and a socially hopeless computer geek. Elliott is in love with co-worker Alison Gardner, who doesn't even know he exists. 'I'll give anything to have her', he mumbles. Be careful what you wish for, Elliot, for instead of a fairy godmother, he got the Devil instead, and what a hot babe she is too. So Satan, with 'offices in Purgatory, Hell and Los Angelas', offers Elliott seven wishes to change his life, in exchange for his pitiful soul. For his first wish, Elliott wants to be married to Alison, and to be rich and powerful ('always a popular choice' says the devil). And wham! He wakes up stringly-haired, speaks Spanish and married to Alison. But there's a loophole, Elliott didn't say anything about Alison loving him so his wife hates his guts and has an affair with her English instructor. And a teeny last bit - he's a Columbian drug lord, about to be gunned down. Now on to Wish Number 2... When Elliott complains about his wish, the devil tells him he should have been more specific in defining what he wanted. Each wish is fulfilled, but with a crushing catch as the devil finds a loophole. But no matter how specific Elliot gets, the she-devil always finds a way to turn his dream into a nightmare. Even Elliot, who is growing a little wiser and a bit more sophisticated with each wish, could not be even more specific. And as each of Elliott's wishes is misinterpreted on purpose by the devil, and each is spiced up for the audience with ridiculous and very funny visual jokes. The wishes turn out very funny. It's not giving anything away to say that Elliot also becomes an intellectual writer, a sensitive poet, a star athlete and a famous historical figure. The humour is in the twists on these things. The various wigs, fake noses and altered teeth as used to change Brandon Fraser's look from wish to wish and are carried out well, thanks to Fraser's comedic abilities. Australian actress Frances O'Connor, as Alison, is featured in each of Elliott's wishes, and her personality changes according to the devil's wicked sense of humour. However, her detailed and subtle characterisations are overshadowed by Hurley, who is perpetually dressed to kill. Surprisingly, Hurley carries herself rather well here as she is more known as the girlfriend (now former girlfriend) of Hugh Grant and the face of Estee Lauder than a respected actress. 'Bedazzled' has a witty script and plenty to look out for, as the audiences wait and see what Elliott wishes for next, and how the devil is going to out-wit him. Hilariously funny! |
